A lot of guys don’t even know beard dandruff exists until it happens to them. I’m going to go out on a limb and say if you are reading this, you might be experiencing some of the symptoms. Perhaps you have a red, itchy, or irritable beard. Maybe you have white flakes and dry skin around your mouth or chin? If so, I’m going to help you eliminate the cause of the problem.
First things first, know that beard dandruff is totally curable and most guys with a beard experience it as some time or another. Changes in your grooming routine, not moisturizing, using soap, and other small factors like weather can dry out your beard and create an imbalance. In most cases, dandruff signals the area is dry and irritated, and needs some TLC.

Here are three easy ways you can prevent and cure beard dandruff:
Step 1: Treat the Beard Dandruff
The first step in recovering your beard is to treat the white flakes with an anti-dandruff formula. You can use the same anti-dandruff shampoo for your head as your beard. I like T-Gel by Neutrogena, which is affordable and has been around for years. More recently, Mister Beardwash are catering to men with beards. You’ll want to wash your beard at least twice a week to get the flakes under control.
Step 2: Switch Soaps
The second step to a healthy beard is to switch soaps. Most soaps are drying and will wreak havoc on your beard. Switch to one that has a tar based formula, such as Pine Tar, to keep dandruff at bay. You can also find a myriad of beard shampoos and beard conditioners that are balanced for use on the face and that won’t irritate your skin.
Step 3: Opt for Shine
The final step is the one that most men forget, which is to oil your beard. Beard oil has replenishing properties and will protect your beard, enabling you to grow longer, thicker beards. It also moisturizes the skin so that it doesn’t dry out. As dry skin causes the shedding, oiling your beard with a few drops of beard oil each night will give you a healthy, shiny beard to be proud of; Beardbrand has great oil.
With Movember just around the corner, now is the right time to start thinking about what you want to do with your beard over fall, and preparing your skin. Don’t’ wait for dandruff to strike, keep a daily skin regimen that moisturizes, cleanses, and protects the skin for a youthful complexion. This is sound advice for men who beard and men who don’t.
