There are few watch ranges as historic and impressive as OMEGA’s Speedmaster. This was the first watch to make it to the moon and this means that it is a remarkable story in terms of outstanding accomplishments – they have also been used in all six Lunar expeditions. The Speedmaster range includes the iconic Speedmaster Professional Moon watch as well as a few eye-catching chronograph watches, plus there has recently been an exciting addition that all watch enthusiasts will be excited about…
A New Addition
Omega has recently released a new addition to the Speedmaster Moon Watch collection known as the MoonSwatch Gold x OMEGA. Last year, OMEGA released the Swatch x OMEGA Moonwatch, which caused quite a stir and these watches are still only available in a Swatch store. The new MoonSwatch Gold x OMEGA has seconds hands made out of moonshine gold and it is only available in 4 places around the world – Zurich, London, Milan and Tokyo.
Where Did it All Start?
The success of the OMEGA Speedmaster dates all the way back to 1969 when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took a giant leap for mankind with a Speedmaster on their wrists. Since then, the timepiece has been used on the majority of lunar expeditions and it is a watch that has become synonymous with adventure, space and durability.
The Popularity of the Moon Watch
Today, the OMEGA Moon watch is one of the most desirable watches on the market and is considered a luxury. This ensures that the watch continues to display solid resale values, which means that it is a smart investment for anyone looking to buy OMEGA watches. The OMEGA brand has outperformed many of its rivals over the years thanks to impressive marketing stunts like completing the deepest deep dive in history of 10,928 metres – a dive completed by Victor Vescovo wearing the OMEGA Speedmaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep Professional. The watches have also been used in James Bond films in recent times – a nod to 007’s Navy history.
OMEGA Today
The OMEGA Moon Watch was a manual wind watch, which was essential for Lunar missions because this means that it would not lose any function in low gravity. An automatic watch would not work in space because these watches rely on the pull of gravity on the rotor to wind the watch. Additionally, quartz watches were not available until 1969. The Moonwatch is also known for having a black dial – this still remains today and is part of what makes the watch so recognisable, but there are special editions with dials made of silver, gold and other colours.
OMEGA has a long history of manufacturing some of the most advanced, attractive and durable watches in the world. This is most evident with the iconic Speedmaster Professional Moon Watch, which was the first watch to be worn on the moon in 1969. Today, OMEGA continues to build on its legacy and has an impressive new watch to add to the iconic collection which will appeal to many and keep one of the greatest moments in human history fresh in the mind.
