Casa Modelo to Honor the Passed with Crowd-Sourced Ofrenda in LA at Olvera Street festival

To honor the traditions of Día de los Muertos, Casa Modelo is inviting you to raise a glass to those who have passed with a variety of “Beertail” recipes. From the classic Modelo Calavera to the hot and spicy Modelo Ofrenda Picante, Modelo have a beertail for every occasion. Serve with a traditional Day of the Dead bread featuring Modelo Negra (recipe by celebrity chef Rick Bayless). Keep reading to find out how you can participate in a crowd-sourced ofrenda (“altar”) in Los Angeles during The Olvera Street festival.

Casa Modelo is going one step further this year, and will be celebrating with a variety of “Celebra la Vida” (“Celebrate Life”) activations across the nation. Check out their Snapchat filter on October 28th for a festive fixture, and tune into their first-ever Facebook LIVE ofrenda on November 2nd from 1:00-5:00pm PST; this is when you can request a bottle of Modelo or a personalized sugar skull be added to an altar at Olvera Street Festival in honor of your friends and family who have passed.

Modelo Calavera

Recipe by Ariel Mason, Austin

Ingredients:

  • 3 oz. Modelo Especial™
  • 1 1/2 oz. Reposado Tequila
  • 1 oz. Simple Syrup
  • 1/2 oz. Fresh Lime Juice
  • Salt
  • Chili Powder
  • Lime

Method: Rim a chilled martini glass with salt and chili powder. Combine tequila, simple syrup, lime juice and ice in a shaker and shake vigorously. Strain into the glass and top with Modelo Especial™.

Modelo Ofrenda Picante

Recipe by Andrés Chopite-Parra, Austin

Ingredients:

  • 3-4 oz. Modelo Negra™
  • 3/4 oz. Mezcal
  • 3/4 oz. Fresh Lime Juice
  • 1/2 oz. Agave Syrup (1:1 ratio agave nectar to water)
  • 3 bar spoons Worcestershire Sauce
  • 3 dashes Habanero Bitters
  • 4 slices Habanero Peppers
  • Tajín® Clásico Seasoning
  • Red Chili Slices
  • Lime Wheel

Method: Rim a Collins glass with Tajín Clásico Seasoning. Add all ingredients to a shaker, excluding Modelo Negra™, Tajín Clásico Seasoning rim, red chili slices and lime wheel. Shake and strain into the Collins glass. Top with Modelo Negra™.

Modelo Afterlife

Recipe by Xander Klein, Chicago

Ingredients:

  • 3 oz. Modelo Especial™
  • 1 1/2 oz. Navy Strength Rum
  • 1/2 oz. Herbal Liqueur
  • 1/2 oz. Crème de Cacao
  • 1/2 oz. Fresh Lime Juice
  • 1 oz. Vanilla Syrup
  • 1/2 dropper of Bittermens Burlesque Bitters™

Method: Combine in order: rum, crème de cacao, herbal liqueur, lime juice and bitters. Lightly shake all ingredients. Strain the mixture into a flute glass and top with Modelo Especial™.
