Every year, a new class of rookies enters the NFL and patiently await their big day – the day they step out onto the field for the very first time. But is it really their big day? Countless people stand beside these players – guiding them, challenging them, and cheering for them at every step of the way.
To find out more, we chatted with Tampa Bay Buccaneers Tight End O.J. Howard and his dad Kareem Howard to learn about their unique bond. No one has supported O.J. in his rise more than his dad, who has been at every game after that in support of his son. Now we acknowledge that this is Kareem’s big day too.
In celebration of “His Big Day,” Gillette is shining a spotlight on dynamic duo, and shows O.J. as he views his big moment through the eyes of his biggest fan – his dad.

Male Standard: How did feel O.J., to know your dad was watching your first NFL game?
O..J. – My dad has been at every game since I was five, so I was expecting him to be there, but it was an awesome opportunity in working with Gillette to see this game through his eyes as a parent and as a fan. That was different and unique, and really cool.
Male Standard: Kareem, how did you prepare O.J. for success?
Kareem – I’ve always told O.J. to be humble in life. Be humble and work hard. If you work hard, good things will come to you.
Male Standard: O.J., what was it like watching the footage of your dad supporting you from the sidelines?
O..J. – It was a very touching moment: I knew he was supportive, but the things he was saying really touched me. I listened deeply to what he shared, and it struck me I didn’t realize how much he cared about me. I’ve never taken the time to see it from his perspective this journey that we’re on. The biggest thing I took away was when he said it doesn’t matter if I play football or not, he will always support me.
Male Standard: Has this experience changed how you see your dad, O.J.?
O..J. – I always had a special bond with my dad growing up, but this experience has helped us connect on a deeper level, and really see things from each others perspective. It also allows the world to know the bond that we have, and it’s important for me that everyone knows – not just us.
Male Standard: Kareem, how has Gillette impacted your relationship with O.J.?
Kareem – I shave with Gillette; I grew up watching my dad shave with Gillette, and so when it was time to teach O.J. how to shave, I used Gillette – they’ve been in our family tree for a long time, from male-to-male, and have been a big part of our bonding experience. They give a great, smooth shave.
Male Standard: O.J., what is your Male Standard?
O..J. – Every day I wake up and wash my face, and I look in the mirror. This is my opportunity to ask myself, “How do I want to make today go? Do I want it to be a great day or a bad day?” I feel like there are two things you can control each day in your life – your attitude and your effort. No matter what kind of day it is, you can control these outcomes. I always live by my decision.
Male Standard: Kareem, how do you live your life?
Kareem – I put God first: treat others as you want to be treated.
