Basil Hayden’s® Maple Sour Cocktail

On August 25th, bourbon and whiskey connoisseurs across the globe will celebrate a holiday that normally doesn’t get much recognition, but celebrates an truly one of a kind cocktail: Whiskey Sour Day! This year, Basil Hayden’s® Bourbon introduces a unique twist on the traditional whiskey sour with our Basil Hayden’s® Maple Sour, created by top Austin, TX mixologist, Jason Stevens.

With unexpected flavors like tawny port to enhance the spicy characteristics of Basil Hayden’s® Bourbon, and maple syrup to add a deep richness to the flavor of the cocktail, this unique combination of ingredients is the perfect compliment to the traditional tart lemon juice found in a whiskey sour. Basil Hayden’s® Maple Sour adds in the chocolate notes of the Bittermen’s Molé Bitters for a delicious twist on the long-favored traditional whiskey cocktail.

The whiskey sour cocktail actually dates back to the 1700’s, around the same time the Basil Hayden’s recipe was created – and was originally used by the British Navy to help ward off illness in sailors. It wasn’t until eight years later, in 1870, that the whiskey sour was mentioned in the media with its recipe first printed in Wisconsin’s Waukesha Plain Dealer. Ever since, the whiskey sour has remained an iconic and classic cocktail that is a true American staple, with just as much history as Basil Hayden’s® Bourbon itself!
