Would you say men over think fitness?
I do, there’s all these gimmicks nowadays. I don’t think that it’s necessarily difficult to get into shape, it just made to look that way. For instance, I don’t watch my diet. I don’t eat terrible, but I don’t watch my diet when I’m not preparing for something, but when I’m preparing, I keep it real simple. I eat chicken and broccoli. It’s the Wolverine diet. You hear Hugh Jackman and The Rock talk about chicken and broccoli a lot. It’s boring, it’s simple, and it works for me. You don’t need gimmicks, but what you do need is motivation and the ability to work up a sweat. You also need time to figure out what works for your body.
What other fitness gimmicks do you think men fall for?
Magazines are great, but when you see an image of a guy, and he is super in shape, many times, a lot of it has been Photoshopped. We’ve lost sight of what’s real. What we need to do as individuals is measure our expectations of what we want to achieve against ourselves. Let’s work on the best “us” we can be, because you know what, no one wants to see another Arnold Schwarzenegger or the like, because that wouldn’t be unique. No one wants to see another David Acker or Paul Newman because Paul Newman was the best at being who he was.
What did you do to prepare for the Kraft Zesty cookbook photo shoot?
My workout routine is intense, but I haven’t been in a gym in four years. I do Rog. I hit the heavy bag, and I have a neat workout machine in my garage where I lift weights. I do a half hour of Rocky Balboaish exercise, where you see him go full bore. I do that three or four times a week. I don’t worry about diet until I have something that I have to plan for. For example, the Kraft Zesty cookbook. I enjoy grilling. You can’t go wrong with burgers or steaks. In the kitchen, I will try to get in there and cook up whatever sounds good.
How do you cope with insecurities?
Insecurities are battles we go through our whole life. I imagine when you’re 65 or 70 years old, and you used to be this good looking, fit guy, we’re all going to be a better version of ourselves at 35 than we are at 70. So how am I going to cope with that? How insecure am I going to be? Am I even going to care? I think from the time we are able to recognize them to the time we pass away I think it’s about how you deal with them. I think insecurity is more of a fear than anything is. It’s about acceptance. Like, ‘Hey, this is me, and this is who I am, and it is good enough. I don’t have to be any different’. I think that’s kind of a lifelong battle that we have to deal with between each individual. I’m right there with any other guy that can admit it. I have insecurities, every year of my life up to this point.
Do you have any fitness tips for our readers?
Focus on yourself. Focus on the relationships in your life, that you have balanced relationships and that you have good friends and family. That’s how you become your best self. You start setting your priorities based on more important to least important and then eventually all those leads important things start being pushed to the wayside, and you start focusing on things that make you happy and things that are important versus things that you can’t control. You have to realize that in life, there are many aspects in life that you just cannot control, so accept the fact they can’t control everything and figure out a way to make it work for you.
What’s your Male Standard?
It’s funny, growing up before Nike came out with this slogan, my mom used to tell, ‘Just shut up and do it.’ That stuck with me. When life is hard, ‘Just shut up and do it’. Do what you have to do to make yourself feel better and make yourself reach that goal. In the process be compassionate and have a passion for people. Don’t forget that you only have one life. Don’t take it for granted. Keep all this stuff kind of in the back of your mind, and be the best person that you can be. I don’t know that you’re necessarily looking for a reward from life, but positive things tend to find positive people. Make it happen.
