MR PORTER.COM Launches Exclusive Marni Collection

Words by Mr Mansel Fletcher, Features Editor, MR PORTER

It takes a particular eye to walk the fine line between success and ubiquity, but it’s one that the Milan-based brand Marni has successfully navigated since Ms Consuelo Castiglioni founded the label with her husband Gianni in 1994. Marni is known as an insider’s brand, an open secret among men who work in the creative industries because the clothes are wearable, but offbeat. The clothes are hugely well regarded by artistic guys who demand a level of quality that matches the sophistication of the designs.

This fall Ms Castiglioni has designed an exclusive, six-piece collection for MR PORTER, which builds on her 1970s-inspired fall/winter collection. There are four pieces of knitwear and two backpacks. For the sweaters and cardigans the trend for graphic knitwear has been treated with a welcome rigour, which ensures that while there’s a nod to 1970s-era ski sweaters, the overall mood remains contemporary. The cardigans are made from jersey with a bonded, double-faced construction, while the crew necks are made from a single layer of fabric.

The canvas backpacks, meanwhile, are a reinterpretation of the luxurious leather bags that are among Marni’s most popular designs this season. This new, utilitarian material lends them a casual air, which ensures that they’d work with an off-duty outfit, whether you’ve got a big journey ahead of you, or merely the day’s commute.

This wool-blend cardigan by Italian label Marni is crafted with bonded jersey throughout the body and knitted sleeves for a lightly structured finish. This smartened update on a casual classic will hold its shape well, while the contrasting stripes add an athletic air. Team it with a buttoned up shirt and leather satchel for an air of preppy panache.

Created in contrasting dark navy and bright red shades, this Marni backpack is a brilliant choice for the weekend. Its sturdy canvas and leather trims ensure this piece will only look better with use, while there’s plenty of pocket space to keep all your essentials to hand.

Spun for the first time – as opposed to a yarn that is made up of previously processed fibres – virgin wool is renowned for its luxurious softness. Marni’s crew neck sweater is an undeniably stylish way to wear the fabric. Not only do the contrasting side panels provide a sports-inspired spin but, as the festive season approaches, some may be pleased to learn they also create a more streamlined silhouette.
