One of the many joys of aging (ear hair, wild eyebrows, more wrinkles than you care to count) is a head full of grey hair. Life’s not fair is it? However, according to lead researcher Mayumi Ito, Ph.D., a dermatology professor at NYU Langone, a protein called “wont” activates color-supplying stem cells in our hair to produce pigment. But when the protein is inhibited, hair re-growth slows, and those stem cells lose their ability to produce color—resulting in (sigh) grey hair. This groundbreaking new research could lead to the defeat of grey hair for good. But until that glorious day comes, let’s make that silver hair sexy!
Caring for your grey hair
Grey hair usually begins at the temples and sideburns then works its way back through the rest of your head. As your hair turns grey, the texture also changes becoming thicker and more wiry. To combat this, conditioner is going to be your hairs best friend. Conditioner will soften these coarse hairs making them easier to style. You may also want to consider using a shampoo specifically designed for grey hair (I like American Crew Classic Gray Shampoo). This shampoo contains balancing properties to remove brassy yellow tones from grey hair.
If you’re not ready to fully commit to your distinguished new hair color there is one more option: coloring your greys. There are several men’s hair lines out there right now that offer you some options in this realm. You can get rid of the grey altogether or just add a little more pepper to your salt. This second option is awesome for guy’s who don’t want anyone to notice their transformation (you don’t want your dye job to be a topic of discussion at the water cooler, right?). With my client’s, I generally phase out a little of the grey so people notice that something is different they just can’t quite pinpoint what it is. Now let’s talk about styling
Of course, the easiest way to wear grey hair is very short (think, Anderson Cooper or John Slattery). Because the coarse hair’s have a tendency to stick straight out, keeping your lock’s cropped short on the sides will prevent them from getting too wild and unruly. The hair on top can be worn as long or as short as you like. Just keep in mind that the shorter the hair is, the simpler it will be to style. Finish with a firm hold styling product like GO247 Texture Paste or American Crew Fiber.
Grey hair can also be worn at a medium or even fairly long length. Have your stylist use shears all over and make sure they snip away any unruly or especially coarse hairs. They may have to thin it out a little depending on how thick your locks are. When you style it at home, use a moisturizing and shine enhancing product (I like Forming Cream by American Crew). It will soften the texture and add a natural sheen back into dull hair making your job a lot easier.
