The Best Hairstyles For Men With Curly Hair

No man in this day and age wants his hair to look like Greg Brady’s.  So if you’re one of the lucky gent’s that was born with naturally curly hair, it can be hard to find a style that works for you. Never fear curly headed men of the world! I have your hairstyles for men with curly hair right here.

As you’ve probably noticed, curly hair tends to be more dry and brittle than straight hair. So if you want to avoid looking like a Brillo pad while you walk down the street, try using a creamy and moisturizing shampoo on your curls such as American Crew Daily Moisturizing Shampoo or Redken Go Clean Daily Care Shampoo for Men. Conditioner will be another requirement for your frizzy hair. Conditioner’s enable the hair and scalp to retain moisture and are essential for men with curly, dry and coarse hair.  I like American Crew Stimulating Conditioner or Redken Finish Up.

Now let’s talk about styling.

Short:

To wear your curls at a shorter length, have your barber or stylist use shears all over and cut your hair to about finger length on the sides. On the top, you can wear it longer if you still want your curls to be prominent or you can crop them short if you want lower maintenance hair. To style this ‘do, towel dry (or if you want your curls to be extra defined, use a t-shirt to dry. It cuts down the frizz) then apply a little styling cream like American Crew Curl Control and let your locks air dry. You can also twist a few pieces around your fingers for added definition.

Medium:

To achieve this medium length curly hairstyle, have your barber or stylist point cut the hair with shears all over. This will give the style varying lengths allowing the curls to fly free. When styling, t-shirt dry hair then apply a curl cream or lotion (Tigi Bed Head for Men In Check Curl Defining, or Unite Boing Curling Cream) in a scrunching motion. Take a few of the locks in small sections and twist them with your fingers then scrunch again. Once it looks how you want DO NOT TOUCH IT. The more you play around with it the frizzier it will get so hands off!

Long:

This is going to be the most challenging style to upkeep, which is probably why you don’t see a ton of long curly mane’s around town.  This cut needs to be maintained or it will get unmanageable. Make sure you get a trim every 6 weeks and keep it well conditioned and hydrated to prevent it from getting frizzy. Never use a brush on your curls. Instead, use a wide-tooth comb and gently detangle when the hair is soaking wet, as soon as you step out of the shower. Again, you are going to want to dry with a t-shirt or cotton cloth and use a creamy curl-enhancing product. Scrunch the ends, twist a few locks and let it air dry. You can also use a blow dryer with a diffuser attachment on the end if you need your hair dried immediately. And, same as before, don’t mess around with it or you’ll end up with a tumbleweed on top of your head.

Caring for your curly hairstyle is going to take daily work, but the payoff is a luscious mane of head turning hair that is sure to grab you some attention.
