Six Things Every Man Should Do Before Turning 40

Turning 40 is a significant milestone in every man’s life. Whether you’re married with a family, single with an accelerating career, or anywhere in between, the big 4-0 can be a time of reflection or apprehension. You don’t have to slide into your 40’s regretting the things you wish you had done. Challenge yourself to push out of your comfort zone. Here are some ideas to get you started.

Attend a World Series Baseball Game

There’s something about the camaraderie shared by men at a ballgame. Take your father, your son, your brother or best friend. Lose yourself in the excitement and the age-old smells, sights and sounds of the stadium. Drink a beer, eat hot dogs, jump up and down and high five a stranger. This is one experience that every man should have, even if you aren’t the biggest sports fan. Play Ball!

Take a Solo Hiking Trip

Solitude is a wonderful thing. Pack up a tent and some simple provisions and take off on a weekend hike. No one but you, the wildlife and the stillness of nature. Technology is a necessary part of everyday life, but it can cause an enormous amount of stress and anxiety. Walk in the sun, listen to the echo of the bird’s song, the hum of the insects and the sound of the crickets as the sun goes down. For experienced hikers, take this opportunity to experience a new location deep in the back country. For those who are not as comfortable being alone in the wilderness, there are numerous back country sites and trails within a few miles of a main road, giving you the solitude of the outdoors with the peace of mind of civilization close by. Because hiking and backpacking can be dangerous when done alone, consider hiking with a small group of close friends, and spending time alone near the campsite or a lake once at the destination.

Men Must Hunt

Even if it’s just one time, go on a hunting trip. Experience the gratification of the men who walked before you when they brought home the food that would feed their family. Stalk the prey, aim and fire. You can cook and enjoy the fresh meat yourself, or donate it to a food bank or homeless shelter. Using quality hunting gear, like weather resistant clothing, DOA decoys, calls and more will make your experience more enjoyable if you have never been hunting before.

Work on Your Own Car

Who needs a mechanic for the simple things? Unless your car requires a major overhaul, you can probably fix it. Make Google your friend and research tutorials and articles that can help. Become familiar with all aspects of routine maintenance, minor repairs and basic mechanics. Save money, and impress the ladies, and men, who don’t know how to open their hood or check their tire pressure.

Travel To A New State

Every wanted to take a road trip across the country? If you don’t have time to take that long road trip to the Florida beaches or downtown L.A., you can still visit a neighboring state you haven’t seen before. Take weekend trip to a state you’ve never visited and try something new. Going somewhere different is exhilarating and gives you a chance to see more of the country.

Start and Finish a Marathon

You don’t have to win a marathon, just be a participant. The exhilaration of crossing the finish line will be a thrill like no other. Doing this before turning 40 will help you keep an exercise routine that can improve your health for many years to come. Now that you’ve got the idea, come up with additional challenges for yourself. Not matter where you are in life, 40 has never looked better with this bucket list.
