Mott & Bow utilizes the finest Turkish fabrics and production methods, coining the process “Denim Science.” They handcraft every finishing process (resin application, scraping, spraying, pinning, tying, washing and drying) and offer each pair for $96. MottandBow.com also offers an at home try on program, where customers can order two pairs for the price of one and return the extra pair free of charge, to ensure the right size every time.

The Science of Denim Finishing

The finishing process, both dry and wet, separates experts from novice denim makers. After sowing, each jean is an empty canvas ready to be worked on. At Mott & Bow they handcraft every finishing process of your jean and make it look simply effortless. A lot of the cost of a premium jean is attributed to the amount of labor intensity in the finishing process. If the wash formula consists of resin application, each jean is either sprayed or immersed into a resin mix (the two processes create different looks and feels).

Jeans are scraped in different areas to replicate the distress of normal use. All of their scraping is hand made for a natural look (Yes, your jean is unique!). Intensities, materials, and forms of scraping vary per jean style. The characteristic of the denim fabric is exalted in the scraping (with sand paper) process. Only after mastering the scraping process is one considered a denim artist. Mott & Bow scrapers have years of experience. In order to create deeper contrasts within the scraped areas of the jeans, we take them through a spraying process, one piece at a time. Neutralization is important after this process!

In the laundry processes it’s not about being doing everything at once to optimize efficiency. It is about understanding the art of sequences.  Mott & Bow pin the jeans and often tie them in curious ways before they go into the wet processes. They remove the knots at different times in the washing process (the intention is to create subtle contrasts). They put the jeans into industrial washers and let the fun begin with a mix of special ingredients and temperatures. The wash process is analogous to cooking a sophisticated meal. Depending on the final look desired, the ingredients inside the machines range from pumice rock (yes the notorious stone wash actually has stone in it) to silicone balls.
