So you’ve decided to propose. You’ve picked out the perfect diamond, set it in a ring she’ll swoon over and you’re about to checkout when you’re asked about her ring size. But while you were trying to remember which cut she preferred and what metal color she definitely didn’t want, you blanked on this extremely important specifications. Now what?
The last thing you want to do in this scenario is guess. Because even though you can usually resize a ring to be smaller, it’s almost impossible to make it bigger. So, to keep you from avoiding either scenario, make sure you follow one or more of these discreet ways to figure out her ring size.
1. Borrow another ring
If your significant other is an avid fashion ring wearer, then you have a really good chance of hitting the nail on the head in terms of ring size. Over the next few weeks, try to make a note of which rings she wears on which fingers. Then, the next time she leaves them in her jewelry box, take a measuring tape over and write down some specifications. If there’s one that she wears on her ring finger, you’ve hit the jackpot. If not, take measurements of any ring that she wears on a finger that is larger than her ring finger. This will likely be her thumb, pointer, or middle.

2. Get her friends/family involved
There is a really good chance that her mom or best friend already knows her ring size. If not, they’ll definitely be able to help you figure it out. Plus, they’ll probably be excited to be a part of the process.
Have one of them bring your future fiance to go shopping and hit up a jewelry store. It doesn’t have to be high end, just as long as they have rings. Encourage them to be very natural, try on rings, and get your girlfriend to try them too. Then, have them make a note of the size that she picks up.
Alternatively, you could have her mom or one of her friends borrow one of her rings for you to measure. She’ll probably suspect much less when her best friend borrows a ring compared to finding out you took it.
3. Pretend like you’re shopping for someone else
This is especially easy if you’re proposing around the holidays and shopping for others isn’t out of the norm. You can pretty easily ask your significant other to help you go shopping for your mom, sister, aunt, etc. Tell her you’re looking for a ring but you want to see it on a hand. She’ll likely volunteer hers and you’ll be able to get a really good idea of what size she is.
Figuring out ring size doesn’t have to be as hard as it seems! Just be clever and use all your available resources. Plus, always keep in mind that a bit too big is probably better than a bit too small.
