Coldplay to Play Super Bowl Halftime Show

We don’t know who’ll be playing Super Bowl 50, except Coldplay.  The British band that broke through in 2000 with the smash hit “Yellow” will help the NFL celebrate its fiftieth Super Bowl with a gala show sponsored by Pepsi.

The Super Bowl takes place on Feb 7, 2016, at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, CA.

Not only is Coldplay going to bring its infectious jangle-pop to international audiences, but it’s going to do so in a way that honors the tradition of the NFL and this major milestone.  Though it’s unclear how, the band, mostly lead singer Chris Martin, is going to bust out more than a rock show, but something that reflect the culture and history of the NFL.  It looks as though special guests will mount the stage with Coldplay to help point toward the future.  One thing’s for sure, there will be laser lights a ‘plenty, and probably some small, controlled explosions that burn the skin a little but don’t do any permanent damage.

Don’t worry if you’re getting antsy to see the show–you can hit Pepsi.com to watch a video of behind-the-scenes footage of the show coming together.

Coldplay gained a reputation at the beginning of the decade for melodic–perhaps even majestic—guitars, complemented by Martin’s driving piano.  As with many bands, Coldplay expanded its sound to accommodate experimentation and less immediately accessible sounds.  Its 2015 release A Head Full of Dreams was the band’s seventh studio album, among no less than three live collections.

By being chosen to play the Super Bowl, Coldplay joins Paul McCartney, U2, The Who, Madonna, and Katy Perry, among other top-notch acts that have rocked midfield.  We’re all wishing them a set free of wardrobe malfunctions.
