As you may know, the Open Championship in golf will kick off this Sunday, July 13th, in Liverpool and Laphroaig Scotch is encouraging those watching the game at home to try a summery Scotch cocktail for the games.
- The Open Championship is the oldest of the four major championships in professional golf, established in 1860, and takes places annually at one of nine courses in either Scotland or England. While this year the Open is hosted in Liverpool, the first Open Championship was played in 1860 at Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland, and Scotland continued to host the games until 1894.
- Golf has a rich, deep-rooted history in Scotland. In fact, the modern game of golf originated in Scotland in the 15th century. First mentioned as “gowf” in 1457, golf was originally played on a course of 22 holes. It was reduced to 18 holds at the Royal and Ancient Gold Club of St. Andrews in 1764, and other courses followed suit. St. Andrews is dubbed the “home of golf” and exercises legislative authority over the game worldwide (except the U.S. and Mexico).
